Bata is the economic capital of Equatorial Guinea and seat of the national parliament. It is also the capital of the mainland region — Río Muni, the largest part of the country — and the largest, most populous city in Equatorial Guinea, ahead of Malabo on Bioko Island.

The historic city of Bata is the capital of Littoral Province, known locally as the city of love.

Hot, oppressive, wet and cloudy year-round. Temperatures usually stay between 23 °C and 31 °C, rarely below 22 °C or above 32 °C. Best time to visit: late June to late August, for beach and pool days.
